Project based learning at Explorer
Teachers at Explorer have the freedom to design their own curriculum. Although teachers work closely together to share best practices and to investigate new strategies, learning and projects look different in each grade level and, in fact, each class.
Our close connection with High Tech High has lead to several teachers developing multi-week, multi-subject projects. In other classes projects are mainly one subject based and are generally much shorter.

A key part of project-based learning is exhibition. While some classes hold exhibitions at the end of each project, the products created in one or more projects per class are exhibited at the school wide public exhibition in June. This is a huge, bustling evening event. Parents and local community members are invited into the school. Classrooms are transformed into new, display spaces. They are crowded with visitors. Students act as tour guides, approaching adults who come into the room in order to explain and present their work.
