The social and emotional curriculum
Our social emotional curriculum is part of everything that we do. A key part of this is the class meetings we hold at the beginning of each day. In these meetings we greet, share, play games and reflect together. This is also a time in which teachers can teach specific social skills such as how to read social cues and empathy training.
Teachers use positive language when talking to children. As a staff, we focus on preemptive problem solving: talking about possible problems that might occur before we do something. In addition, we teach problem solving strategies and hold problem-solving meetings to deal with issues as they arise. In order to help children learn about individual responsibilities, we emphasize in both logical and natural consequences of behavior.
The result of this program is that children grow in self-confidence, they are responsible, independent and articulate about their feelings.
